All You Need to Know About Carpet Delamination

Wall-to-wall carpets are a popular choice for many homeowners across North America, especially if the flooring is not aesthetically pleasing or functional.

However, carpets come with their own set of issues. One of the worst of them is carpet delamination: when a secondary backing gets separated from the primary backing.

What causes carpet delamination?

The result of carpet delamination is a substantially wrinkled carpet that's impossible to re-stretch. Let's go down the list of leading causes of carpet delamination.

Bonding agent

Sometimes the bonding agent fails. In most cases, the failure is due to a latex that connects the primary and secondary backing. It could be a bad batch of adhesive or a poor choice by the carpet installers.

Incorrect installation

Homeowners might make a mistake by choosing the most affordable option on the market. Carpet installation might be a more significant investment, but if the contractor doesn't have enough experience, the improper installation might quickly lead to carpet delamination.

Carpet saturation

Unfortunately, carpet delamination can also be caused by cleaning solutions that haven't been adequately extracted.

For this reason, rinsing the carpet after cleaning is an essential step in the process.

The chemicals and solvents can dissolve the adhesive or latex in the carpet and cause delamination. Additionally, dog or cat urine that hasn't been cleaned thoroughly can eventually eat away at the carpet backing.

Standard wear and tear

High-quality carpets can maintain their appearance for a long time. However, even correctly installed and durable carpets will show signs of wear and tear at some point.

Heavy foot traffic, moving furniture, wheelchairs, and other factors exacerbate the delamination.

How to prevent carpet delamination

It's best to do whatever is necessary to prevent premature carpet delamination so that the existing carpet does not have to be replaced much sooner than planned.

Keep in mind that all cleaning products and chemicals must be properly removed. They clean the carpet well, but if left in the carpet's fibers for too long, they could cause severe damage.

Another prudent piece of advice is to avoid grinding feet into the carpet, especially at pivot points. Ozone generators are another item that should be limited in use because they're air pollutants that can damage latex.

Finally, call a certified carpet cleaning contractor from time to time to prevent, or at least postpone, carpet delamination for a while.

Keep the carpet clean and in one piece

Discovering carpet delamination can ruin anyone's day. The causes can be anything from poor manufacturing to heavy foot traffic.

Often, it's impossible to prevent it, and carpet replacement is inevitable. Other times, some careful preventative measures can go a long way in preserving the carpet and maintaining an enjoyable home environment.
